Mr. Spears,
As Chairperson of the Lambert Trophy Championship Association, I am reaching out with deep concern regarding the recent news that Marshall University is considering withdrawing from the Independence Bowl against Army. As you may know, the Lambert Trophy recognizes excellence in Eastern college football, and Army remains a strong contender for this prestigious honor.
The implications of pulling out of this bowl game extend far beyond the immediate logistical challenges. Such a decision risks tarnishing the reputation of Marshall’s storied football program, which has always stood as a pillar of, in particular, resilience and perseverance. Furthermore, it undermines the efforts and dedication of the student-athletes who have remained with the program through a season filled with challenges and a tumultuous offseason to earn this bowl opportunity. To deny these young men the chance to compete would be a disservice to their hard work and commitment.
Additionally, this decision would unfairly impact the Army football program. These student-athletes, who have committed themselves not only to their team but to future service to our nation, deserve the opportunity to showcase their skills and dedication on a national stage. By withdrawing, Marshall would not only disappoint its own players but also diminish the spirit of competition that college football is built upon.
As Chairperson, I strongly urge Marshall University to remain in the Independence Bowl. College football is about more than wins and losses; it’s about upholding the values of perseverance, integrity, and respect. By choosing to play, Marshall would honor these values and send a powerful message about what it means to be part of the college football community.
I respectfully ask that you carefully consider this decision, not only for the good of Marshall University but for the sport and its values.
Sincerely,
AJ Mayowski
Chairperson, Lambert Trophy Championship Association
